Peseiro will commence work with the three-time African champions after the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
On Wednesday, December 29, 2021, the Nigeria Football Federation in a memo announced the appointment of Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro as the new coach of the Nigerian national football team. Peseiro is not a popular name to Nigerian football fans, there has been questions regarding the identity and expertise of the new Super Eagles boss who will take over reigns after the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
Playing Career
Peseiro, 61, had a not-so-impressive playing career. The Coruche, Santarém District (Portugal) born tactician did not play higher than the Segunda Liga in Portugal. He started out professionally as a player with Sport Lisboa e Cartaxo in 1979 and retired at the age of 34 after the end of the 1993-94 season with fourth division side União de Santarém.
Real Madrid
The new Super Eagles boss assisted fellow Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz (head coach) at Real Madrid during the 2003/24 season. Peseiro and his boss (Queiroz) were dismissed from the Spanish capital club at the end of the season after failing to win the league title, falling behind Valencia CF, FC Barcelona, and Deportivo de La Coruña on the league log.
Venezuela
On February 4, 2020, Peseiro was appointed the Head Coach of the Venezuelan national team after Rafael Dudamel quit the position. He would loose 3-0 on his debut on October 9, 2020, to a Carlos Queiroz managed Colombian national team, in a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification clash. After a group stage exit at the 2021 Copa América in Brazil, the Portuguese coach vacated his position with the South Americans in August 2021 over unpaid wages.
Titles
In a career spanning 29 years, Peseiro has won four trophies with one coming during his time as an assistant coach. In total, the Portuguese has managed 362 games so far, won 175, drawn 81, and lost 106.
Relationship With Mourinho
Peseiro is in good terms with Jose Mourinho. The pair met while training to be coaches. President of the Nigeria Football Federation Amaju Pinnick claims to have spoken to Mourinho before appointing Peseiro to lead the country’s national team.
