Eguavoen Made Us One Family- Iwobi

Everton forward, Alex Iwobi, has praised the interim coach of the Super Eagles, Augustine Eguavoen, for turning the team into what he called ‘more of a family’ since he took charge of the national team.

Eguavoen took charge of the team last December, with the task of leading the team to Nations Cup success in Cameroon after NFF sacked Gernot Rohr.

Iwobi made his first start of the tournament in the last group game fixture against Guinea-Bissau. In an interview with Punch, Iwobi gave an insight into what is currently happening in the team.

The former Arsenal star said: “I’m not too sure anything has changed playing under Eguavoen, but I feel the team is hungrier under him now. We are more of a family now on and off the pitch. We are one big family now.”

He stated further that the team is happy with the way they won all group matches and vowed that the team is ready to face any opponent.

“We are all happy to have won our three opening games. These victories show that we are ready for any opponent and it is a good signal we are sending out there to any team that wants to play Nigeria. We are doing well and we need to keep the consistency. We want to beat the best to win the AFCON and we are not getting carried away with these wins,” the 2019 AFCON bronze-medallist pointed.

Iwobi also noted that he would give his best in the tournament despite being overlooked for the ‘number 10 role.’

“The number 10 role is my favourite position, however, I’m happy to play in any position the coach wants me to play in. I will give my best to the team. I don’t really mind playing out on the wings,” the Everton midfielder noted.
