As clamour for the entire globe to address the violence in Nigeria reach its peak, the government of the United States through its Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, has finally addressed the issue. In a statement released on Thursday, October 22, 2020, the US called for investigations into the shooting of peaceful protesters by Nigerian soldiers. Condemning the excessive use of force by Nigerian security agents, Pompeo advised that those responsible must be held accountable for their actions.
We welcome an immediate investigation into any use of excessive force by members of the security forces. Those involved should be held to account in accordance with Nigerian law. The United States strongly condemns the use of excessive force by military forces who fired on unarmed demonstrators in Lagos, causing death and injury

Pompeo also extended condolences to families of victims, and noted that peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are “essential human rights and core democratic principles” which authorities ought to respect.
