Tems Is The First Indigenous Nigerian Artist To Win Two Grammys

Tems has made history as the first indigenous Nigerian artist to win two Grammy Awards after winning the Best African Music Performance category at the 67th edition of the global award.

The category was introduced at the 66th edition of the Grammys, and South African singer Tyla became the first winner in the history of the Grammys.

Tems also became the first Nigerian to win the Best African Music Performance category of the Grammy Awards at the Crypto.com Arena on Sunday, February 2, 2025, with her hit song “Love Me Jeje.”

She beat off competition from American artist Chris Brown and fellow Nigerian acts Burna Boy, Yemi Alade, and Asake to become the second winner in the history of the category.

“Dear God, thank you so much for putting me on this stage and bringing me this team,” an excited Tems said after receiving the award.

Tems also made history as the first indigenous African artist to bag a nomination in the R&B category of the Grammys with her hit song “Burning” but lost the category to “Saturn” by SZA. She also missed out on the Best Global Music Album category to Matt B and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Recall that Tems won the Best Melodic Rap Performance category of the 2023 Grammy Awards for her feature on the global hit track “Wait For U” with Future and Drake.
