British-Nigerian actress Cynthia Erivo adds MBE to her growing list of prestigious accolades.
London-born actress and global arts icon Cynthia Erivo has been formally recognised by the British Royal Family, receiving one of the United Kingdom’s most prestigious civil honours from Prince William at a ceremony held at Windsor Castle.
The 39-year-old Wicked actress was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) during an investiture ceremony on Tuesday, May 19, at Windsor Castle in Windsor, England, where Prince William personally presented her with the honour.
The MBE is one of the UK’s highest civil and military honours, awarded for outstanding contributions across a range of fields including the arts, science, public service, and charitable work.
Erivo received the distinction specifically for her remarkable services to music and drama.
In a moment that captured widespread attention, Erivo dipped into a picture-perfect curtsy as she beamed with pride while accepting the honour from the Prince of Wales.
Dressed in Givenchy by Sarah Burton for the occasion, Erivo later expressed her gratitude on Instagram, writing: “An official MBE. This is a day I will never forget.”

A Moment She “Never Thought Would Happen”
When news of the honour was first announced as part of King Charles’ 2026 New Year Honours List late last year, Erivo spoke with heartfelt emotion about what the recognition meant to her.
“To be given this recognition to celebrate the work that I love to do within the arts, specifically music and drama, is an honour I could never have thought would happen,” she said.
“I hope it shows that I care deeply about the work and will continue to do so to the best of my abilities.”
A Career That Defies Gravity
Erivo, originally from Stockwell in south London, is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where she completed her acting degree in 2010.
She is among the most decorated British performers of her generation, one of the few artists to have received nominations across all four major American entertainment awards, the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony, having won all but the Oscar.
She made her Broadway debut in the revival of The Color Purple in 2015, winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical and a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.
She later earned Academy Award nominations for her work in the biographical film Harriet.
Most recently, she starred as Elphaba in the two Wicked films before returning to the West End in Dracula this year.
A Star-Studded Ceremony
Erivo was not alone in receiving the honour. Among the other high-profile recipients at the Windsor Castle ceremony were teenage darts sensation Luke Littler and comedian Matt Lucas, who received an OBE, alongside England footballer Ella Toone and rugby union star Sadia Kabeya.
In total, 66 individuals were presented with honours for their contributions across various fields.
Tuesday’s ceremony was Prince William’s fifth investiture of 2026 and the 20th conducted by the royal family this year.
Not Her First Royal Encounter
Tuesday’s ceremony was not Erivo’s first encounter with the royal family.
In May 2024, she was among a number of celebrated alumni who welcomed King Charles and Queen Camilla to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art to celebrate the famous acting school’s 120th anniversary.
For Erivo, the MBE marks yet another milestone in a career that has consistently broken barriers, a fitting tribute to one of Britain’s most gifted and globally celebrated performing artists.
