Britain is set to have its seventh Prime Minister in a decade as Keir Starmer steps down after losing the confidence of his own party.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday announced his resignation as leader of the United Kingdom’s governing Labour Party, bringing a turbulent premiership to a close less than two years after he led the party to a sweeping general election victory.
Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer confirmed he was stepping down, paving the way for the country’s seventh prime minister in a decade.
“The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election,” Starmer said.
“I have heard the answer from my parliamentary party to that question and I accept that answer with good grace.”
He framed his departure as one final act of putting the country first, saying: “Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign.”
What Led to His Fall?
Facing a prolonged cost-of-living crisis, as well as numerous protests, U-turns and political scandals, Starmer’s popularity had declined sharply.
By the end of 2025, opinion polls rated him as one of Britain’s most unpopular prime ministers.
Labour’s slump was compounded by the appointment of a close friend of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein as the United Kingdom’s ambassador to the United States, a decision for which Starmer bore reputational damage, even though he himself had no connection to Epstein and is not accused of any wrongdoing.
The party then suffered a devastating blow in local elections, losing more than 1,100 council seats across England, while Reform UK, the Nigel Farage-led anti-immigration party, won more than 1,450.
By mid-May 2026, over 95 Labour MPs had called on Starmer to resign or outline a timetable for his departure.
The final blow came from within. In a coordinated move, a fellow Labour lawmaker resigned his seat to allow former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to contest a by-election in Makerfield.
Burnham won decisively on June 18, and arrived in London on Monday to be sworn in as a Member of Parliament.
What Happens Next?
Starmer confirmed he had spoken to King Charles III of his decision and will remain in post as caretaker prime minister until a successor is chosen.
He asked the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party to open nominations on July 9, with the process concluded by the summer recess on July 16, ensuring a new leader is in place before Parliament returns in September.
Andy Burnham is the runaway favourite to succeed him. Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting, once considered Burnham’s most likely rival, announced Monday that he would back Burnham’s leadership bid instead.
Burnham described Starmer’s resignation as “the beginning of a transition” and confirmed he would put himself forward, pledging an “orderly and responsible” process.
Reactions have been sharply divided. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood praised Starmer for bringing Labour “from the brink, back to power,” while former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was scathing, accusing Starmer of having “abandoned those in need” and “facilitated genocide in Gaza.”
Conservative opposition leader Kemi Badenoch called him a “terrible prime minister” and questioned the weeks-long wait for a new leader, raising concerns about national security in the interim.
Starmer’s departure marks the end of a brief but turbulent chapter in British politics.
He becomes the sixth UK Prime Minister to resign outside Downing Street in seven years, a sobering symbol of the instability that has come to define British governance in recent times.
