Idris Elba was knighted by King Charles in a ceremony at the Windsor Castle.
King Charles has conferred a knighthood on acclaimed British actor Idris Elba at Windsor Castle, in a ceremony that also saw Dame Meera Syal, comedian Paul Elliott, and several other notable individuals recognised for their outstanding contributions to the arts, sport, and charitable causes.
The investiture ceremony took place at Windsor Castle on Tuesday, with King Charles personally presenting the honours to recipients.
Elba’s knighthood was awarded in recognition of his services to young people, with particular emphasis on his work in education and community development through the Elba Hope Foundation, which he established in 2022.

His connection to the King dates back to his teenage years, when the King’s Trust, formerly known as the Prince’s Trust, provided support as he began his journey with the National Youth Music Theatre.

The actor is also expected to collaborate with King Charles on a documentary celebrating the charity’s 50th anniversary.
The honour arrives just ahead of the June 5 theatrical release of his upcoming film, Masters of the Universe.
The 53-year-old will henceforth carry the title Sir Idris Elba.
Meera Syal was elevated to damehood in acknowledgement of her distinguished career in drama and literature, as well as her charitable endeavours.
A respected figure in both film and television, she also serves as an ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Society, a commitment she took on following her father’s dementia diagnosis.
Comedian Paul Elliott, widely beloved as “Paul Chuckle” of the iconic Chuckle Brothers duo, received an MBE for his charitable services.
Together with his late brother Barry, the pair left a lasting mark on British television through ChuckleVision, their beloved long-running show that delivered nearly 300 episodes throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
Elliott has been a devoted supporter of Marie Curie, the end-of-life care charity that provided compassionate support to his brother in his final days, an experience he has spoken about with deep gratitude.
Rounding out the ceremony’s headline honourees, Olympic ice dancing legends Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean were awarded a damehood and knighthood respectively, in recognition of their extraordinary services to ice skating and voluntary work.
The pair, who captured the world’s imagination with their gold medal-winning Bolero routine at the 1984 Winter Olympics, have remained prominent figures in the sport and on British television through their long association with ITV’s Dancing on Ice.
