Former United Nations human rights chief Navi Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her lifelong commitment to justice, peace, and international law.
South African human rights lawyer and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, has been named the winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, in recognition of her decades-long fight for human rights, international justice, and global peace.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the decision on Friday, October 9, 2026, praising the 85-year-old jurist for her remarkable contributions to strengthening international law and holding powerful individuals accountable for human rights violations.
According to the committee, Pillay received the prestigious award for her efforts to promote peace and international law, particularly through her work addressing war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.
Announcing the decision in Oslo, committee chairman Jørgen Watne Frydnes described Pillay as a courageous legal pioneer who has worked tirelessly to strengthen the international justice system.

Born in Durban, South Africa, in 1941, Pillay grew up under the country’s apartheid system, where racial discrimination denied millions of Black South Africans basic rights and opportunities.
Despite these challenges, she pursued a legal career and became one of the country’s leading human rights advocates.
During apartheid, she represented political prisoners and activists, including individuals involved in the struggle against racial segregation.
Her commitment to justice eventually took her beyond South Africa, where she played influential roles in several international judicial institutions.

Pillay served as a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, contributing to landmark decisions that helped establish sexual violence as an act of genocide under international law.
She later served at the International Criminal Court before becoming the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in 2008, a position she held until 2014.
Throughout her international career, Pillay has consistently advocated for accountability, equality, and the protection of civilians affected by armed conflicts.
More recently, she chaired a United Nations Commission of Inquiry investigating human rights violations in the occupied Palestinian territories.
In September 2025, the commission concluded that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza, findings that attracted international attention and were strongly rejected by Israeli authorities.
Her involvement in the investigation further highlighted her longstanding commitment to examining alleged human rights abuses, regardless of the political influence of those involved.
The Nobel Committee’s decision comes at a time when international institutions face mounting pressure over ongoing wars, humanitarian crises, and concerns about accountability for violations of international law.
By recognising Pillay, the committee has also emphasised the importance of legal institutions in preventing violence, protecting vulnerable populations, and promoting lasting peace.
The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize carries a monetary award of 12 million Swedish kronor, approximately $1.2 million.
Pillay is expected to receive the award at the official Nobel Peace Prize ceremony scheduled for December 10, 2026, in Oslo, Norway.
Her victory represents a significant milestone for South Africa and the international human rights community, celebrating a lifetime dedicated to the belief that lasting peace cannot exist without justice.
