Nigerian politician and civil rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, and other activists have reportedly been arrested by Nigerian security forces today, January 1, 2021 for carrying out a peaceful procession to mark New Year. Information from eyewitnesses revealed that the 2019 Elections Presidential candidate alongside others were tortured and wounded by security agents believed to be with the Rapid Response Squad at the Gudu junction, Abuja before they were carted away.
Reports making the rounds also confirmed that they were taken to the disbanded SARS Abattoir police station, detained and tortured.
In a tweet, Nigerian journalist/activist, Oluwatosin Adeniji confirmed Sowore’s arrest and disclosed that he complained of nose bleeding due to torture. Since Sowore’s arrest, the hashtag #FreeSowore have been trending on Twitter.
