Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye Elected ECOWAS Chairman

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal has been named the new Chairman of ECOWAS.

The 46-year-old leader was voted into the position at the bloc’s summit held in Sierra Leone, succeeding outgoing chairman President Julius Maada Bio.

Faye steps into the role during a particularly challenging period for West Africa.

The region remains under pressure from rising security threats, backsliding on democratic governance, and tense relations with Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, the three military-run states that have exited the bloc.

In his new position, Faye is anticipated to prioritize restoring unity among member states, maintaining open lines of communication with the departed nations, and driving reforms aimed at improving governance, accountability, and greater involvement of young people in regional affairs.

His appointment also marks a broader shift toward a younger cohort of African leaders taking the helm at a defining moment for the continent.
