Ese Brume Wins Nigeria’s First Olympic Medal In Athletics In 13 Years

Ese Brume of Team Nigeria has won a bronze medal in the Women’s Long Jump event at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

With a best leap of 6.97m, Brume won the bronze medal behind World champion Malaika Mihambo, who clinched gold with her last jump of 7.00m.

The silver medal was won by Brittney Rees of the United States, with a leap of 6.97m ahead of Brume with the countback rule.

Tuesday’s final started with Brume leading with her first jump (6.97m). However, the Nigerian could not improve on her first leap in subsequent attempts.

Having broken the outstanding 7.12m record of Chioma Ajunwa in the build-up to the Olympic Games, there were expectations that Brume will win the gold medal, however, this was not possible.

Following Ajunwa’s gold in Atlanta, Blessing Okagbare also won a silver medal in the Olympic Long Jump event at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Brume’s bronze medal marks Nigeria’s first medal in athletics at the Olympic Games in 13 years.
