Ayra Starr Sets African Spotify Record

Singer Ayra Starr has achieved a landmark feat by becoming the African artist with the most monthly listeners on the global streaming platform Spotify.

By the time of doing this report, Ayra Starr’s monthly listener statistics stood at 31,406,881, while Grammy-winning South African singer Tyla, whom she overtook to go top, stood at 31,223,494.

The Mavin singer’s success on Spotify could be attributed to the release of her second album, “The Year I Turned 21.”

“The Year I Turned 21” had set a new record for the singer after recording the most opening day streams on Spotify for a female artist in Nigeria.

The 15-track album features other top acts such as Asake, Giveon, Seyi Vibez, Coco Jones, Milar, and Anitta.

In an interview with Elle, Ayra Starr said the album is “about confidence and getting money, falling in love and having your heart broken, understanding that life isn’t just about love or money.”

“It’s also about understanding oneself and self-love.

“There are a lot of introspective songs. For example, I end the album with a song called “The Kids Are All Right,” which is my niece singing about dad and finally coming to terms with the death of my dad.

“I have my siblings at the end of the song giving their final goodbye to my dad, giving the updates of their life.”

Ayra Starr now joins the league of Nigerian singers such as Burna Boy, Wizkid, Rema, CKay, and Tems, who have ranked highest on the Spotify monthly list.
