The police chief on Friday said two autopsy results on the deceased did not show evidence of murder.
Hakeem Odumosu, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, has sent out a note of warning to aggrieved Nigerians especially members of the Ijaw Youth Council against protesting over the result of the investigation into the death of Sylvester Oromoni, the deceased Dowen College student.
He said this in reaction to Thursday’s (January 6) protest by members of the Ijaw Youth Council in front of Dowen College. The protesters rejected the report by Lagos State’s Director of Public Prosecution exonerating the accused students and housemasters of their involvement in the death of Sylvester Oromoni.
The police boss at a press conference on Friday January 7, 2022, said the protesters and other Nigerians who are not satisfied with the result of the investigation could seek redress in court. He emphasised that the police will not fold its arms and allow any actions that could threaten the peace in Lagos State.
According to Odumosu: “In spite of the transparent investigation carried out by the police and the non-establishment of prima facie against the suspects, some members of the Ijaw Youth Council, Lagos led by one Comrade Henry Oyobolo protested in front of Dowen College for over two hours yesterday 6th January 2022.
“The protesters including masquerades carried placards and were drumming, thereby causing panic and apprehension. The protesters who conducted themselves in a manner capable of causing a breach of peace also caused a temporary traffic jam. But for the professional way the police managed the protest, it would have led to violence.
“Much as we commiserate with the bereaved family on the death of their lovely and promising child, it is advised that the protesters and other individuals or groups who are still aggrieved should go to the law court to seek redress instead of taking the law into their own hands.”
