Both countries have never met at the senior men’s level.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria will confront the Portuguese national team in an international friendly scheduled to hold on November 17, 2022, at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon, Portugal. The game which will serve as a pre-World Cup friendly will see five-time Ballon d’Or winner, Cristiano Ronaldo, seek for glory against a Nigerian side that will be depending on a frontline led by Victor Osimhen of SSC Napoli.
It is the first time both nations will be meeting at the senior men’s national team level. While the Super Eagles of Nigeria have won the Africa Cup of Nations on three occasions, and the Olympic gold, silver, and bronze medals, the Portuguese side won their first major international trophy in Euros 2016 after beating hosts France 1-0 at the Stade de France.
Prior the game against Portugal, Jose Peseiro’s Super Eagles will confront the Algerian national team in an international friendly on September 27, 2022. It is interesting to note that the head coach of the Nigerian side (Jose Peseiro), hails from Portugal, but will look aside the love for motherland when hostilities commence on November 17.
