Bobrisky’s arrest has been trending since it was confirmed by the EFCC on Thursday.
Cross-dresser Iris Okuneye, aka Bobrisky, was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for the abuse of the Naira.
The spokesperson of the commission, Dele Oyewale, confirmed Bobrisky’s arrest on Thursday, April 4, 2024.
“He is with us. We arrested him over the currency mutilation and abuse of the Naira. He is in our facility in Lagos State,” Oyewale confirmed.
After the news of his arrest went public, the EFCC released further information about his arrest and said he would be charged to court.
“Operatives of the Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have commenced investigation of Iris Okuneye, a.k.a Bobrisky, for allegedly spraying Naira notes,” an official statement from the commission said.
“The EFCC had invited the 31-year old following a video report of spraying and flaunting wads of new Naira notes at the premiere of a movie, Ajakaju, produced by Eniola Ajao, a Nollywood actress and producer, at Film One Circle Mall, Lekki, Lagos on March 24, 2024.
“Investigation also revealed that he had also committed the alleged offence at some other event centres and parties at different times.
“Following the invitation by the Commission, he arrived at the Lagos Zonal Command of the EFCC in the morning of Wednesday, April 4, 2024 for interrogation and volunteered his statements.
“He will soon be charged to court upon conclusion of investigation.”
While fans of the most popular crossdresser questioned his arrest, critics hailed the move as there have been calls for his arrest by some influencers, such as Very Dark Man, over allegations of engaging in LGBTQ activities, which are outlawed in Nigeria.
Despite his release on bail, some people have questioned the authenticity of his arrest.

However, the commission is right under the law to arrest citizens that abuse the naira because it is a financial crime, but the EFCC must also take the fight against naira abuse nationwide to prove that Bobrisky’s arrest is not a witch-hunt campaign.
A large number of Nigerians are guilty of spraying money at celebrants during events like Bobrisky, and they go free.
The arrest of Bobrisky must set the pace for a campaign aimed at bringing everyone guilty of disrespecting the naira to face the law.
