Salah feels he has not been protected by the club/Lionscrib
Salah believes he has been made the scapegoat for Liverpool’s woes this season.
Mohamed Salah delivered a stunning post-match interview on Saturday evening that has sent shockwaves through the football world, claiming Liverpool have abandoned him and that his once-strong relationship with manager Arne Slot has completely collapsed.
The Egyptian forward, who remained on the bench for the entirety of Liverpool’s dramatic 3-3 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road, did not hold back when speaking to media in the mixed zone. It marked the third consecutive Premier League match Salah has started on the bench, a situation virtually unprecedented in his illustrious Liverpool career.
“I Can’t Believe It”
Salah expressed deep disappointment at being benched for the third match running, stating he’s “very, very disappointed” with how events have unfolded.
“I can’t believe it, I’m very, very disappointed. I have done so much for this club down the years and especially last season. Now I’m sitting on the bench and I don’t know why. It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus,” the 33-year-old told The Times.
The Liverpool legend, who signed a new two-year contract extension just last April, went further in his criticism. “That is how I am feeling. I think it is very clear that someone wanted me to get all of the blame,” Salah said, suggesting the club has scapegoated him despite widespread poor form across the squad.
Broken Promises and No Relationship with Slot
Perhaps most explosively, Salah revealed he received promises in the summer that have not been kept, stating: “I got a lot of promises in the summer and so far I am on the bench for three games so I can’t say they keep the promise.”
The forward then delivered his most damning assessment of the situation. “I said many times before that I had a good relationship with the manager, and all of a sudden we don’t have any relationship. I don’t know why but it seems to me, how I see it, that someone doesn’t want me in the club,” Salah stated.

“I Earned My Position”
Defending his record and responding to potential criticism, Salah insisted: “I don’t think I’m the problem. I have done so much for this club. The respect, I want to get it. I don’t have to go every day fighting for my position because I earned it. I am not bigger than anyone but I earned my position.”

The Egyptian star also addressed what he sees as unfair treatment compared to other players. “I think if I’m somewhere else, every club would protect this player. I don’t know why I’m in this situation now,” he said, before adding his perspective on how the situation appears: “How I see it now is like you throw Mo under the bus because he is the problem in the team now.”
A Potential Anfield Goodbye

In what may be the most concerning development for Liverpool fans, Salah hinted that next Saturday’s home match against Brighton could potentially be his last appearance at Anfield. “I said to my family, come to the Brighton game. I don’t know if I am going to play or not, but I am going to enjoy it. In my head, I’m going to enjoy that game because I don’t know what is going to happen now,” he revealed.
“I will be at Anfield to say goodbye to the fans and go to the Africa Cup,” Salah added, confirming he will depart for Egypt’s AFCON campaign after the Brighton fixture.
The timing is significant. With Saudi Pro League clubs reportedly monitoring the situation closely, speculation about a January exit has intensified dramatically following these explosive comments.
Slot’s Response
When questioned about his decision to leave Salah out for the third consecutive match, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot remained measured. “We have to accept the situation we are in and I make my choices based on that,” Slot told reporters after the Leeds draw.
What Happens Next?
This unprecedented public dispute between one of Liverpool’s greatest ever players and the club’s management presents the hierarchy with an extraordinarily difficult decision.
Do they back their under-pressure manager who is trying to turn around a disastrous season, or do they side with a club legend who has given them over 250 goals and countless memorable moments since 2017?
Salah currently sits third on Liverpool’s all-time scoring list behind only Ian Rush and Roger Hunt. His contributions to the club’s Champions League and Premier League triumphs under Jurgen Klopp cannot be overstated.
However, his form this season has been concerning, with just five goals in 19 appearances across all competitions. Slot’s decision to bench him has some tactical justification, even if the execution and communication appear to have been badly mishandled based on Salah’s account.
The situation will dominate headlines in the coming days as Liverpool prepare for Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Inter Milan. Whether Salah features in that match, and how both parties navigate this very public fallout, could determine the future of one of football’s most decorated partnerships.
For now, all eyes turn to next Saturday at Anfield, where Liverpool fans may witness either the beginning of reconciliation or a deeply emotional farewell to one of their greatest ever players.
