The German tactician guided Nigeria into the last phase of the African 2022 World Cup qualifiers but the dismal display of the 2013 AFCON champions is a huge cause of concern for fans and stake holders.
Head coach of the Nigerian national team Gernot Rohr might be sacked in no distant time according to rumours making the round on the Nigerian media space.
Vanguard Newspaper on Thursday reported that the Nigeria Football Federation was in a meeting to consider the position of the German tactician, decide his replacement and “tidy up on his compensation.’’
Another Nigerian media outlet Oma Sports already reported Gernot Rohr’s sack saying: “The German’s conservative approach and Super Eagles’ uninspiring performances have been heavily criticised by the media and supporters.’’
Nigeria secured qualification into the play-off round of the African World Cup qualifiers after beating Liberia 2-0 and a 1-1 draw against Cape Verde at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos during the last international break, but the team’s dismal showing on the field of play has left fans and stakeholders bitter.
The Super Eagles will be at the Africa Cup of Nations in January 2022 before fighting for the World Cup ticket in March, and there are fears that Rohr who guided the team to a third place finish at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt is tactically inept to bring glory.
