Despite no immediate casualty reports, the train incident has renewed concerns about railway safety across Nigeria.
Fear spread among passengers on Tuesday morning, August 26, when an Abuja-bound train to Kaduna went off the rails, stranding hundreds of travelers and raising alarm about potential injuries.
According to the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), the derailment happened at 11:09 a.m., moments after leaving Abuja, at Kilometre 49 along the stretch between Kubwa and Asham stations.
Witnesses reported chaotic scenes as passengers rushed to escape amid widespread confusion and terror.
A passenger who reached out to relatives following the incident reported: “People were running in different directions, not knowing what might happen next. It was terrifying.”
While the underlying cause remains uncertain, initial reports indicated that no deaths have been officially documented.

Military sources revealed that armed forces personnel were rapidly sent to the location to establish security and assist with passenger evacuation.
Through a statement issued by NRC Managing Director Kayode Opeifa, the organization acknowledged the derailment and provided public assurance that emergency response teams, including healthcare workers and local medical facilities, had been activated.
“Full compliment of security already on ground as effort is ongoing to move all passengers on train back to Abuja safely,” Opeifa declared, noting that investigations into what caused the derailment had begun.
The Abuja-Kaduna rail line, among Nigeria’s most heavily trafficked routes, has faced previous public scrutiny due to security incidents and operational difficulties.
The Tuesday incident, despite no immediate casualty reports, has revived concerns about railway transportation safety nationwide as six individuals sustained injuries.
All passengers have been removed from the scene, with NRC representatives continuing their situation evaluation.
