Ghana conducted retaliatory deportations targeting Israel in efforts to uphold its international standing.
Three Israeli nationals have been expelled by Ghana following accusations that Israeli officials subjected multiple Ghanaian arrivals in Tel Aviv last week to mistreatment and unjustified deportation.
The action represents Ghana’s method of demonstrating it won’t accept what it views as unjust treatment of its citizens overseas.
According to a statement released on 10 December by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the three Ghanaians were expelled from Israel “without justification” under circumstances the ministry characterized as unacceptable.
As a countermeasure, Accra officials directed that three Israeli nationals who had recently entered the country be placed on departing flights.
The announcement was posted online by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, who stated the government had been “compelled” to respond following events at Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport.
He noted that diplomatic efforts between both nations are currently underway to resolve the matter.

The ministry additionally reported that Israel’s chargé d’affaires in Accra was called in for consultations, since the Israeli ambassador was traveling abroad during this period.
Ghana emphasized that although its relationship with Israel holds significance, visitors from allied countries must receive the same level of respect Ghana anticipates for its own nationals when they travel internationally.
The triggering incident occurred on 7 December, when Ghanaian travelers bound for Israel—including four parliamentary delegation members en route to a cybersecurity conference—were held upon landing.
Three individuals among them were subsequently refused entry and returned on flights back. Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Ministry previously condemned Israel’s treatment of these travelers, describing it as “traumatic” and implying the passengers faced discriminatory targeting.
Through the deportation of the three Israelis, Ghana is delivering an unambiguous signal: any conduct perceived as disrespectful to its nationals will receive a strong reciprocal action.
This incident now presents a new strain on bilateral relations as both governments attempt to reduce tensions.
