Atiku has contested for the Nigerian presidency a record six times.
Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 Nigerian presidential election, Atiku Abubakar, has proposed a constitutional amendment that will establish a single term of six years for Nigerian presidents and a rotational presidency among Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
Atiku believes it will “advance the course of constitutional democracy in Nigeria.”
In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, Jibrin Barau, on August 30, 2024, the former Vice President advised the National Assembly to consider his proposal in the ongoing process of constitutional amendment.

Atiku, who has contested for Nigeria’s presidency for a record six times in 30 years, also proposed that the standard of academic qualification for political office candidates be raised.
“The office of the President shall rotate among the six geopolitical zones of the Federation on a single term of six years, flowing between the North and South on the single term of six years, respectively,” part of the proposal said.
“Subject to the provisions of subsection 1, the President shall vacate his office at the expiration of a period of six years commencing from the date when he has been elected to such office before.”
Atiku will be 80 by the time Nigerians head to the polls for the presidential election in 2027. He has indicated interest in running for a record-extending seven times.
Critics believe he should allow younger candidates to vie for the presidency, but Atiku believes he is mentally and physically capable of leading the country despite his age.
