South African President Cytril Ramaphosa Falls Sicks After BRICS Summit

His withdrawal comes at a time when Deputy President Paul Mashatile is also recovering from a minor medical procedure, leaving South Africa’s two most senior leaders away from public duties at the same time.

The 73-year-old president arrived back from the BRICS summit in India on Monday, with his medical team advising him to rest and recuperate, according to the presidency.

The summit itself, bringing together BRICS members Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, wrapped up in New Delhi on Sunday after two days of discussions centered on inclusive global growth and the situation in the Middle East.

His office stated: “Where possible, the president has asked the respective ministers to represent him at scheduled engagements.”

Mashatile, meanwhile, gave an update on Tuesday, saying his “recovery is progressing well” and that he is “regaining strength each day.”

He continued: “On the advice of my doctors, I will continue resting until advised otherwise while work and delegated responsibilities continue to be underway in the capable team in my office with other stakeholders in government, business and other sectors.”

The simultaneous absences of both leaders come at a politically charged moment, as South Africa heads toward local government elections set for November 4.
