Trump Warns EU Of ‘Serious Tariffs’ Over Canada Associate Membership Plan

US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose significant tariffs on Europe if plans for Canada to become an “associate member” of the European Union move forward in a way he considers hostile to the United States.

The proposal to grant Canada some form of associate status with the EU has received support from the European Commissioner.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has also indicated that his government is exploring closer cooperation with the European bloc, saying Canada is seeking a “unique alliance” with the EU.

However, Trump expressed strong reservations about the proposal when questioned by reporters.

He dismissed the idea as “laughable” and warned that the United States could respond economically if he believes the arrangement is intended to work against American interests.

“If I think it’s at all a hostile act, I will put very serious tariffs or stop trading with Europe,” he said, adding: “If it’s a good intention, that’s fine”.

Trump’s comments come at a time when trade relations between the United States and Canada have already faced renewed tensions.

The US recently increased tariffs on Canadian goods, prompting Canada to introduce retaliatory tariffs of its own. The latest warning from Trump suggests that closer economic or political cooperation between Canada and the European Union could potentially become another point of friction in relations between Washington, Ottawa and Brussels.

The proposed arrangement would also represent unfamiliar territory for the European Union. The bloc has never previously had an associate member, meaning there is currently no established example of exactly what such a status would involve in practice.

As a result, questions remain over what rights, responsibilities or economic privileges Canada could receive under such an arrangement.

For now, discussions surrounding closer Canada-EU ties continue, while Trump has made clear that Washington will be watching the development and assessing whether the proposed relationship affects US economic interests.
