Atiku warned against any attempt to postpone the presidential election billed for Jabnuary 16, 2026
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has cautioned against postponing Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, urging authorities to uphold electoral integrity.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has warned against any attempt to postpone Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, insisting that the scheduled date must be respected.
Atiku, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), issued the warning on Wednesday, October 28, following a meeting with leaders of the TinubuMustGo movement in Abuja.
The former Vice President expressed concerns over reports suggesting that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) might seek to shift the January 16, 2027, presidential election.
According to Atiku, the alleged move followed the ruling party’s experience during its recent presidential campaign activities in Kaduna State.
He insisted that Nigerians must be allowed to exercise their democratic rights without unnecessary interference or manipulation of the electoral timetable.
“Now I hear that they want to shift the date of the election because of their Kaduna experience. Whatever it is, they must hold the election, and when they hold it, we will vote them out,” Atiku declared.
His warning comes amid similar allegations by the ADC Presidential Campaign Council that the federal government could pressure the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) into postponing the election.

In a statement signed by its Director of Strategic Communication, Phrank Shaibu, the council alleged that the government might use concerns surrounding an Ebola outbreak to justify changing the electoral timetable.
The opposition party urged INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, to resist political interference and protect the commission’s independence.
The council maintained that any proposed adjustment to the election date must be supported by credible evidence and openly communicated to Nigerians.
However, the allegations remain unsubstantiated, with no confirmed government directive to postpone the election.
Atiku’s warning adds to growing political tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections, as opposition parties demand transparency, electoral accountability and strict adherence to democratic principles.
