At least 64 people have died and over 100 others injured following a devastating high-speed train collision in central Spain.
Spain has been thrown into mourning after two high-speed passenger trains collided on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, near the town of Urda in Toledo province, leaving at least 64 people dead and more than 100 injured.
The tragic accident occurred approximately 130 kilometres south of Madrid when a train operated by Spain’s national railway company, Renfe, crashed into the rear of a stationary train belonging to private operator Iryo.
The powerful impact caused several carriages to derail, with some plunging down an embankment and leaving passengers trapped inside the wreckage.
Emergency responders, including firefighters, medical personnel and rescue teams, rushed to the scene to evacuate survivors and recover victims.
Authorities confirmed that 58 injured passengers were transported to hospitals, with 15 reportedly in critical condition.

The president of the Castilla-La Mancha region, Emiliano García-Page, warned that the death toll could increase as rescue operations continued.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed shock over the tragedy, extending condolences to the victims and their families while pledging government support.
European leaders also expressed solidarity with Spain, as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen conveyed her condolences following the devastating incident.
Railway operations connecting Madrid with southern Spain were suspended as investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The disaster has renewed serious concerns about railway safety in Spain, particularly following another deadly high-speed train collision near Adamuz in January 2026 that claimed 46 lives.
Spain operates one of the world’s largest high-speed railway networks, making the latest tragedy particularly alarming for passengers and transport authorities.
As investigations continue, authorities are working to determine the exact cause of the collision while families await information about missing loved ones.
The tragedy has sparked renewed calls for stronger railway safety measures.
