Israel’s crucial parliamentary election puts Netanyahu’s leadership to the test as voters decide the country’s political future amid growing tensions.
Israelis are heading to the polls in a closely contested parliamentary election that could determine Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s political future.
Millions of Israelis are casting their votes on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, in a historic parliamentary election widely regarded as a major test of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s leadership.
The election marks Israel’s first national vote since the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks and the subsequent conflicts involving Gaza, Lebanon and Iran.
Security concerns, political accountability and economic pressures have dominated the campaign.
Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, is seeking to retain power through his Likud party and its right-wing and religious coalition partners.
However, he faces significant opposition from former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, who leads the centrist Yashar party.
Recent opinion polls suggest a closely contested election, with neither Netanyahu’s coalition nor the opposition guaranteed the parliamentary majority required to form a government.

Under Israel’s electoral system, voters elect representatives to the 120-seat Knesset, the country’s parliament. A political coalition must secure at least 61 seats to govern, making negotiations between parties crucial.
The election campaign has also focused heavily on Netanyahu’s handling of national security, particularly questions surrounding the October 2023 attacks and the government’s response to the subsequent wars.

Other major issues include military service exemptions for ultra-Orthodox Jewish men, judicial reforms and growing divisions over Israel’s political direction.
The outcome could significantly influence Israel’s foreign relations, particularly its diplomatic ties with the United States and its approach to the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Political analysts believe smaller political parties could play a decisive role in determining the next government, potentially creating prolonged coalition negotiations.
Voting is scheduled to conclude at 10 p.m. local time, when exit polls are expected to provide the first indication of the results. With Netanyahu’s political future uncertain, the election represents a defining moment for Israel’s leadership and regional stability.
