Britney Spears has been struggling with substance abuse.
Britney Spears has entered a rehabilitation facility following her arrest for driving under the influence in March.
The pop star is seeking treatment for substance abuse after reportedly reaching a personal low point in the wake of the incident.
On March 5, Spears was pulled over by the California Highway Patrol on suspicion of driving under the influence of “a combination of drugs and alcohol.”
An unidentified substance was also found in her vehicle at the time.
Her manager responded to the arrest, saying: “This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully, this can be the first step in a long-overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”
That support has now taken a concrete form.
According to Us Weekly, a representative for Spears confirmed that she had voluntarily enrolled in a treatment facility to address her substance abuse issues.
TMZ also cited a source close to the singer who revealed that her decision to enter rehab was partly motivated by her looming court date.
Spears is scheduled to appear in court on May 4 over the DUI charge.
The source noted that Spears, who has previously struggled with alcohol and substances including the ADHD medication Adderall, “knows strategically” that entering rehab “will look good in front of the judge,” as it signals she is “taking it seriously.”
The source further disclosed that she “hit rock bottom” in the aftermath of the arrest, but that her sons — Sean, 20, and Jayden, 19 — have been “strongly supportive” of her choice to seek treatment.
