Goodluck Jonathan Considers Running For 2027 Presidency

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has hinted at a possible return to the presidential race in 2027, saying he will seek broad counsel before making any decision as pressure from his supporters continues to mount.

Jonathan, who governed Nigeria from 2009 to 2015 before losing to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, addressed a group of supporters who marched to his office on Thursday, calling on him to throw his hat into the ring ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking directly to the crowd, the former president said, “The presidential race is not a computer game, but I heard you, and I will consult widely.”

Jonathan also emphasized the importance of patriotism in nation-building, stressing that while committed citizens work to develop their country, those who lack patriotism drain national resources and channel them abroad for personal gain.

On the matter of national stability, he stressed that “the key thing is peace in this country, and you will continue to advocate for that, and you continue to advocate for peaceful and credible elections in the country, because if we don’t have peaceful and credible elections, most good citizens will not want to bother getting involved in politics.”

This is not the first time Jonathan’s supporters have publicly pushed for his return to power.

In April, a group of youths gathered at his office near the Farmers’ Market in the Maitama district of Abuja, staging a similar rally urging him to contest the presidency.
