Following FC Barcelona’s 2-1 loss to Real Madrid in the El Classico on Saturday, April 10, 2021, Ronald Koeman has been left frustrated with the result and stormed out of an interview when quizzed on calls for a penalty after Martin Braiwthwaite was brought down in the box by Ferland Mendy, and the referee refused to call it in. The Barca boss believes it was a clear penalty, and when he asked the opinion of the journalist, the Dutchman walked out of the interview after failing to get a reply.
In the 1st half we weren’t good. In the 2nd we improved. I just ask refs to accept decisions. It was a penalty… It was really clear. But we have to accept it and shut up. It was really clear. Really clear. (to interviewer) You saw it, was it a penalty?”
Ronald Koeman
Saturday’s defeat dealt a big blow to Barca’s push for the league title as they are one point behind league leaders, Real Madrid, and one point behind second-placed Atletico Madrid that might extend the lead to four points today, April 11, with a win against Real Betis and move up to top of the table. The race for the league title is still open with eight games left to play.
