The political chieftain was impeached during Monday’s plenary session.
The Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly Paul Emeziem has been impeached. Emeziem was impeached on Monday during plenary after 19 out of 27 lawmakers in the south-eastern Nigerian state signed the impeachment letter which was read on the floor of the house.
Amara Iwuanyanwu who has been impeached as the Deputy Speaker led the impeachment move as the lawmakers cited abuse of office and high-handedness, gross misconduct, and forgery as reasons for impeaching the political chieftain.
Following the impeachment, Kennedy Ibeh of the Obowo constituency was elected to replace Emeziem who laughed off the impeachment move, describing it as “childish, null and void.’’
Emeziem said “Amara Iwuanyanwu can’t convene a plenary because he was properly impeached. If there should be any plenary, I am the one empowered by the law to call for it.’’
“Today is not our plenary day. Today is for our committee sittings not plenary. Amara Iwuanyanwu stands impeached,’’ he added.
It will be recalled that in November 2020, the lawmakers in a similar vein impeached former speaker Chiji Collins.
