Another tragedy hits Lagos following collapsed Ikoyi building.
Five persons have been confirmed dead in a gas explosion at Ladipo in the Mushin Local Government area of Lagos State. The explosion happened on Tuesday morning at the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) domestic retail centre located In Ojekunle Street at the popular Ladipo Spare Parts Market.
Ibrahim Farinloye, spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the incident to Channels Television. He acknowledged that the bodies of four adults have so far been reclaimed from the site of the explosion. They included three men and a woman identified as one Mama Funmi. A 10-year-old boy was rescued and taken to the hospital, but died before getting to the medical centre.
Farinloye also said that the fire at the scene had already been put out while emergency workers were making efforts to recover more bodies. Those present include personnel of NEMA, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire Service, and the police.
The explosion comes two weeks after a high-rise building under construction collapsed with dozens trapped in Ikoyi, Lagos. At least 45 bodies have been recovered from the debris of the 21-storey building located along Gerrard Road in Lagos. Among the deceased were Mr Femi Osibona, the developer of the ill-fated property and founder of Fourscore Homes Limited.
