Wizkid bagged numerous awards in 2021 such as the Apple Music African Artist of the Year.
Superstar musician Wizkid has expressed excitement over the success he has achieved in 2021 with the 11th track off his Made in Lagos album ‘Essence.’ The song emerged as the first Nigerian track to break the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The song which was released on October 2020 features Nigerian songstress Tems. Essence has bagged both singers a Grammy nomination.
Expressing his excitement at the success of the song during his headline concert at the Livespot X festival, Wizkid said: “How can a young small boy from Ojuelegba, Surulere make a song with another girl from the same Lagos Nigeria and that song goes all the way to sell one million copies in America?
“That same song also got nominated for a Grammy award. That same song got on the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
“The gag of the story is the same person that made that same song is one small boy from Ojuelegba.’’
Essence attained platinum status barely a month after it was certified in Gold in the United States.
On Apple music, the album has 322 million streams, 229 million on Spotify, 227 million on YouTube, 140 million streams on Audiomack, over 40 million on Bloom Play and 20.1 million on Pandora.
The album ‘Made in Lagos’ has hit 1 Billion streams globally less than a year after release.
Wizkid’s ‘Made in Lagos’ album got a Grammy nomination in the ‘Best Global Music Album’ category.
