Keisha Lance Bottoms has made American political history, becoming the first Black woman elected governor of a U.S. state following her landmark victory in Georgia‘s gubernatorial election.
The former Atlanta mayor and Democratic candidate defeated Republican businessman Rick Jackson in the November 3, 2026, election, marking a historic breakthrough for Black women in American politics.
Her victory also makes her Georgia’s first female governor-elect and ends more than two decades of Republican control of the state’s highest political office.

Bottoms, 56, previously served as mayor of Atlanta from 2018 to 2022, gaining national recognition for her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and nationwide protests against racial injustice.
Following her mayoral tenure, she joined former President Joe Biden‘s administration, serving as director of the White House Office of Public Engagement.
Her experience in local and federal government helped shape her campaign for Georgia’s governorship.
Throughout her campaign, Bottoms focused on improving healthcare access, reducing living costs, protecting voting rights, and expanding economic opportunities for Georgia residents.
She also pledged to expand Medicaid coverage and address challenges facing working families.
Her victory represents a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to increase women’s representation in American political leadership, particularly in positions historically dominated by men.
The election also signals a major political shift in Georgia, a closely contested state that has become increasingly influential in national elections.
Bottoms’ historic achievement follows years of political organizing and voter mobilization across Georgia, including efforts led by prominent Democratic figures such as Stacey Abrams.
As she prepares to assume office in January 2027, Bottoms faces the challenge of translating her campaign promises into policies capable of addressing Georgia’s economic and social priorities.
Her election marks a defining moment in American history, opening a new chapter for representation, leadership, and political inclusion across the United States.
