Peter Obi’s campaign convoy came under attack in Calabar, raising fresh concerns over political violence ahead of the 2027 elections.
The campaign convoy of Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), came under attack by suspected political thugs in Calabar, Cross River State, on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, raising fresh concerns over political violence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The incident reportedly occurred around 2:20 p.m. near Watt Market Roundabout, shortly after Obi visited the palace of the Obong of Calabar.
His convoy was returning to Metropolitan Hotel, where he was scheduled to attend a presidential town hall meeting.
According to reports, suspected hoodlums armed with machetes, sticks and other dangerous objects attacked vehicles in the convoy, smashing windscreens and causing panic among supporters and residents.
Several supporters reportedly sustained injuries, although the full extent of casualties remains unclear.
Obi’s media aide, Esther Umoh, initially raised the alarm through social media, warning that suspected thugs were attempting to attack the convoy.
Reacting to the incident, the former Anambra State governor condemned the violence, explaining that his security personnel had advised him to take an alternative route after the attackers began throwing stones and displaying weapons.
Obi maintained that political intimidation must not be allowed to undermine democratic participation in the forthcoming elections.
