Signing Ronaldo Was A Mistake, Sell Him- Former Juve President

Criticisms have continued to pour in following the exit of Juventus in the second round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League. The latest in line is the opinion of former Juventus president, Giovanni Gigli, that the purchase of Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid in the summer of 2018 was an ”expensive mistake,” and has urged the Turin giants to sell the Portuguese football star by the end of the season.

At the age of 36, Ronaldo has scored vital goals for the Italian side and broken football records, as well as generated huge revenues for the club. Out of 121 appearances for the Italian league champions, the five-time ballon d’Or winner has scored 92 times. So far this term (2020/2021), Ronaldo has scored 27 times for Juve but their elimination from Europe’s biggest football clubs competition at the hands of FC Porto has seen questions raised about the ability of the former Manchester United star to deliver the Champions League to Juve.

Quizzed by Radio Punto Nuovo on the signing of Ronaldo being a wrong move, Gigli opined:

Absolutely, yes! I said that on his very first day at Juventus. He is a great champion but is too expensive. Now it’s up to Juventus. They’ve been paying him €1m per goal. [Juve president Andrea] Agnelli must be self-critical, but he doesn’t have great collaborators. The club should free Ronaldo at the end of the season and the same goes for [Fabio] Paratici. He’s an expensive mistake. Maybe Agnelli had promoted him to remove him from his position afterwards. This could be the scenario
