Tinubu insisted that his choice of a Muslim running mate is based on competence.
Following a closed-door meeting between the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the Pentecostal Bishops Forum of Northern Nigeria, the Christian leaders maintained their stand of not supporting the presidential bid of the former Lagos State governor and urged Christians to vote for the candidate of their choice in 2023.
Tinubu met with the Christian leaders on Thursday, September 22, 2022 in Abuja amidst controversies surrounding his choice to go with a Muslim as running mate. While speaking during the meeting, Chairman of the Pentecostal Bishops Forum of Northern Nigeria, Archbishop John Praise, said the religious body is not open to endorsing any candidate.
“We are not committed to endorsing anybody, but you should ask your conscience and from what you have heard and from the explanation, he (Tinubu) had given to us to make your own judgement of who will better rule and handle the country.”

The Muslim-Muslim ticket of Tinubu has not gone down well with a lot of Nigerian Christians, but the former Lagos State governor noted that his choice of running with a fellow Muslim, Kashim Shettima, is based on competence not religion. Tinubu explained that only competent leadership can solve the country’s problems and assured Nigerian Christians of closeness with him.
