The US has expressed support for Israel in its fight against a retaliatory threat from Iran.
After an Israeli attack on the Iranian embassy in Syria, the US has been on high alert over a possible retaliatory attack by Iran on American and Israeli assets, a US official told Reuters on Friday.
“We’re definitely at a high state of vigilance,” the US official said.
Warplanes suspected to be owned by Israel bombarded the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria, on Monday, April 2, 2024.
The attack marked a major escalation in Israeli conflict with its regional adversaries after an Iranian military commander died during the attack.
After the attack, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps said that seven of its military advisers were killed during the strike.

A major military official who died in the attack is Mohammad Reza Zahedi, who is a senior commander in the Iranian Quds Force, an elite foreign espionage arm in Iran.
While reacting to the attack, the Iranian government said it has the right to “take a decisive response.”
The President of the United States, Joe Biden, had a lengthy phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, April 4, 2024.
Part of their discussions centred on Iran’s threats and plans to contain a possible attack, which CNN says might happen next week.
“Our teams have been in regular and continuous contact since then. The United States fully supports the defense of Israel against threats from Iran,” a senior US government official disclosed.
