The gubernatorial election until Tuesday was hailed for being peaceful as Soludo is set to become governor of the state after winning eighteen local governments.
The Anambra State gubernatorial election which has been hailed for its peaceful conduct on Saturday and Sunday, took a different turn on Tuesday during the supplementary election in Ihiala as some gunmen exchanged gunshots with security forces in Ihiala.
Daily Post reports that the incident occurred in the Osumoghu junction as operatives of the Nigerian police exchanged shots with the gunmen for more than three hours. Reports suggest that the gunmen were seeking entrance into Ihiala from Imo State.
The Ihiala towns of Mbosi and Osumoghu where the attacks occurred, share borders with communities in Imo State. Security forces were forced to block the Mbosi/Osumoghu junction bordering Imo State as part of security measures towards ensuring the election was conducted.
When journalists tried to pass through the Osumoghu junction, a joint security operatives which comprised the police, army, navy, and other agencies, asked them to go back as their “men are in the bush now, and it will be risky for you to take this route.’’
We expect a statement from security forces later on the gunfire exchange.
