The German tactician believes the team has what it takes to emerge champions in Cameroon.
Former chief coach of the Nigerian national team Gernot Rohr has stated that there was a huge chance of him winning the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations with the Super Eagles had he not been sacked by the Nigeria Football Federation. The German tactician was relieved of his role as the Super Eagles boss on Sunday, December 12, despite qualifying the team for the continental showpiece and the playoff round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Rohr, 68, during an interview with ESPN recounted his 64-month stay with the three-time African champions and insisted that they can still go on to claim the title in Cameroon without his services.
“Of course! Last time we made third. We had a good AFCON, we lost in the semifinal in the last second,” Rohr opined.
“This time, I’m sure it would have been better because the team has been growing together for five years and we had our different strategies, and the tactics were becoming more and more efficient.
“And I think even without me, they will do it, they can do it, because this team is young, is intelligent, and they can fight. They love their fatherland and they will be able to do very well at the next AFCON.”
Former Nigerian international Austin Eguaveon has been named the interim coach of the Super Eagles ahead of the AFCON.
