A political group has asked INEC to disqualify Peter Obi.
The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has denied claims suggesting that he received the total sum of $150m in donation from Nigerians in diaspora ahead of the 2023 general elections.
It will be recalled that a political group known as the Tinubu-Shettima Connect asked Nigeria’s ruling electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to disqualify Peter Obi because the alleged funding in their view violates the Nigerian Electoral Act.
Reacting to the claims, the former Anambra State governor during a meeting with Nigerians in London on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, described it as mere speculation and noted that he travelled out of Nigeria as part of efforts to ensure that Nigerians in diaspora participate in the electoral process.
“Nobody has given me anything. That is speculation. What I need is not what they would give me. But what they would give Nigeria, because we need them to turn around Nigeria. This is the energy, the capacity that we need to turn around Nigeria. Every country that was turned around, was done by the diaspora. Even in the Bible, Joseph who left later came back to feed his people.’’

The Labour Party presidential candidate commands strong support from Nigerians in the diaspora and will be banking on it alongside other factors in 2023.
